Lampwork beads
The technique to make glass beads developed several thousand years ago and is still used today, only with more modern tools!
The name lampworking comes from the early beadmaker's oil lamp which was used to melt the glass. Nowadays a gas torch is used instead.
The glass is melted to a honey consistency and is wound around a metal mandrel coated with bead release. Bead release is that white dusty stuff you usually find in cheap imported beads. Serious and responsible bead artists are very careful about cleaning the beads before selling as the dusty bead release can be hazardous to inhale.
After the base bead is formed it's time to shape and decorate. In addition to decorate with glass in different colours some other materials can be used such as metal leaf and foil (gold, silver, copper and palladium are commonly used), goldstone, enamels and pixie dust (a shimmering mica powder).
My beads are made with some different brands of glass, all of the type of glass called soda lime glass. I mainly use Effetre and Vetrofond glass from Italy and Lauscha glass from Germany.
All my beads are carefully cleaned and kiln annealed to ensure that no stress is left in the glass.
